A standard Everest expedition takes 60 to 90 days from arrival in Nepal to return home. The summit push itself takes 5 to 7 days from base camp. The other 55 to 85 days are acclimatization, waiting, and the slow work of teaching your body to function with a third of the oxygen it expects.

The Number, and Why It Does Not Tell You Much

Most expedition operators quote 60 days. The range is typically 55 to 70 for a standard south col expedition from Nepal, 70 to 90 if you build in buffer days for weather. The Tibetan (north) route runs similar lengths.

What that number obscures: around 15 days of trekking before base camp, nearly 30 days of acclimatization rotations above base camp, 10 to 20 days waiting at base camp for a summit window, and 5 to 7 days for the actual summit push. Each of these phases has its own terrain, its own logic, its own risks. "Sixty days" describes a calendar. It does not describe what fills it.

The Trek to Base Camp: 8 to 10 Days

The Nepal-side expedition begins in Lukla, a village with an airstrip carved into a hillside at 2,860 metres. From Lukla, climbers walk for 8 to 10 days to Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres, covering roughly 130 kilometres through the Khumbu valley.

The route passes Namche Bazaar, the de facto capital of Sherpa country, and moves through Tengboche and Dingboche, gaining altitude in a rhythm calibrated for acclimatization. It is not a brutal slog. The pace is deliberately slow. Climbers who rush the trek to base camp pay for it in the rotations above.

Base Camp itself sits on the Khumbu Glacier, a city of tents that swells to several hundred people during peak season. It is also, at 5,364 metres, already well above anything on most continents.

Why Acclimatization Takes Weeks, Not Days

The acclimatization schedule exists because the human body cannot shortcut altitude physiology. Red blood cell production increases, lung capacity expands, and the respiratory system recalibrates. But these changes take time measured in weeks. Rush them and the result is Acute Mountain Sickness, which can escalate to HACE (brain swelling) or HAPE (fluid in the lungs). Both can kill within hours.

The standard guidance: for every 1,000 metres gained above 3,000 metres, spend at least one night. This is the minimum. For Everest, which is nearly 5,000 metres above base camp, the actual schedule is far more gradual.

Rebecca Long, writing about her first acclimatization rotation from base camp, described reaching approximately 6,000 metres already familiar with the route, leaning over with both hands on her knees, "gasping for that sweet scarce oxygen." Acclimatization is not linear. Each rotation reduces symptoms. None of them eliminate the altitude.

The Rotation System: What Those 30 Days Actually Look Like

Acclimatization above base camp runs on a rotation system: go up, come down, repeat. Each rotation goes higher than the last and deposits equipment at the next camp before the climber descends to base camp to recover.

Rotation 1: Base Camp to Camp 1 (6,065m) and Camp 2 (6,400m). Return to base camp.

Rotation 2: Base Camp to Camp 2, with a carry to Camp 3 (7,200m). Return.

The arithmetic of a single rotation reveals what the calendar hides. Long's first rotation included a 3:00am departure from base camp. The Khumbu Icefall, the broken glacier that must be crossed to reach Camp 1, is safest in the cold dark hours before the sun softens the ice and increases the risk of serac collapse. "I will never get used to these dreadful Alpine starts," she wrote. She had climbed the route before.

The six-hour climb from base camp to Camp 1 that a foreign climber manages on the first rotation takes an acclimatized Sherpa two to four hours. The gap closes over rotations but never fully disappears.

At Camp 1, the itinerary says "one night." The reality is a small tent at 6,065 metres where you cannot stand upright. Long used her pee bottle roughly ten times during that night. Her wet clothes did not dry in the cold. Her workaround: "a makeshift dryer of bringing my wet clothes into the foot of my sleeping bag." The rotations work even when they do not feel like they are working. By the end of the first four nights above base camp, most climbers report: no more headaches, faster movement, better sleep.

There is one more detail the rotation calendar does not show. While traversing the icefall on one of her rotations, Long spotted what appeared to be human remains under a rock. Clothes. Hair. The glacier shifts continuously. What was buried becomes visible.

The Summit Window: Waiting Is the Part Nobody Prepares For

By late April, most climbers have completed their rotations and descended to base camp for a final rest. The tents are ready at all four camps. The ropes are fixed. The climbers are as acclimatized as they will ever be.

Then they wait.

The summit window on Everest is controlled by the jet stream. Between approximately May 5 and May 25, the jet stream typically shifts north of the summit, leaving a period of lower winds. This window is not guaranteed, not permanent, and not equally available to every team. Some years it opens twice. Some years it closes after two days.

Meteorologists provide satellite weather forecasts down to 6-hour windows. Expedition leaders watch these like stock prices. The decision to go is a calculation involving wind speed at the summit, temperature, cloud cover, and how many teams are attempting simultaneously. Too many teams on the same day means a queue at the Hillary Step. A queue in the death zone costs oxygen and time.

The waiting is psychological pressure of a specific kind. Climbers are physically ready, equipment is deployed, the summit is visible on clear days. But the window has not opened. A base camp tent at 5,364 metres is not a comfortable place to spend two more weeks after two months of preparation.

Summit Push and Descent: The Final 5 to 7 Days

When the window opens, the summit push from base camp to summit and back takes 5 to 7 days.

Day 1: Base Camp to Camp 2 (6,400m).

Day 2: Camp 2 to Camp 3 (7,200m).

Day 3: Camp 3 to Camp 4 (7,900m, South Col).

Day 4: Rest at Camp 4. Summit push begins around midnight.

Day 5: Summit and descent to Camp 2 or lower.

Day 6-7: Descent to base camp, icefall crossing, done.

The midnight departure from Camp 4 gives climbers maximum dark-hours to cross the fixed ropes, reach the Balcony at 8,400m before dawn, continue to the Hillary Step, and reach the summit before early afternoon. Afternoon is when weather changes. The descent must begin by 2:00pm.

The summit push window, from Camp 4 to summit, is typically 5 to 7 hours in good conditions. The descent takes 4 to 6 hours. Add transition time, oxygen bottle changes, and queue delays, and a summit day routinely runs 15 to 17 hours.

About 80 percent of Everest deaths happen on the descent. The body is most depleted, the oxygen is running lowest, and the decisions are hardest precisely when the terrain demands the most from a climber.

The Extremes: From 26 Hours to 90 Days

Nims Purja completed a double traverse of Everest and Lhotse without supplemental oxygen in 25 hours and 1 minute in May 2022. This is a Guinness World Record. It is also the result of a physiology built over a decade of SAS operations at altitude and a training system that would destroy most climbers. He did not acclimatize on a rotation cycle. He is not a model for expedition planning.

Kami Rita Sherpa has summited Everest 32 times as of May 2026. His body has adapted to the mountain over decades. The 60-day acclimatization framework does not apply to him the way it applies to a first-time climber. His relationship with the mountain is not an expedition. It is a working life.
